Hosting
Burrow™’s public site is a Next.js app on Vercel. It hosts both the management UI and the documentation portal. The Swift engine stays on the local Mac.
| Environment | Hostname | Site links | Vercel target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local | http://localhost:3000 |
localhost | next dev |
| Preview | burrow-dev.jasonkoch.io | burrow-dev | preview branch |
| Production | burrow.jasonkoch.io | burrow.jasonkoch.io | main |
The Vercel project name is vault, rooted at apps/web, linked to GitHub PlatypusDBA/Burrow. Pull requests get preview URLs automatically.
Generated canonical links come from apps/web/lib/site.ts and apps/web/lib/site-environments.json. CI builds each environment and fails if data-site-url / public/site-env.json do not match.
What is hosted
The Next.js site serves:
- the 0.1 UI shell (Dashboard, Storage, Files, Activity, Settings);
- the documentation portal at
/docs, rendered from repository markdown.
It does not:
- talk to the local Swift engine from the public internet;
- scan, inventory, or mutate files on any Mac;
- receive arbitrary filesystem access;
- upload inventory to a SaaS backend.
A browser on HTTPS cannot call http://127.0.0.1:8741 because mixed content is blocked. The hosted UI fails closed and shows the engine as disconnected. Local http://localhost:3000 can query health with X-Burrow-Secret (legacy X-PlatypusVault-Secret is still accepted). Run the engine on this Mac for inventory.
Build
Vercel installs apps/web and runs next build. The build copies /docs into the web app and writes public/site-env.json for the current environment.
Local app:
cd apps/web && npm install && npm run dev
MkDocs remains the strict documentation source for agents and make docs. It is not what Vercel publishes.
make docs
make docs-serve
Environment variables
| Variable | Local | Preview | Production |
|---|---|---|---|
NEXT_PUBLIC_SITE_ENV |
local |
preview |
production |
NEXT_PUBLIC_SITE_URL |
http://localhost:3000 |
https://burrow-dev.jasonkoch.io |
https://burrow.jasonkoch.io |
If those are unset, VERCEL_ENV selects preview vs production, and everything else is local.
Domains
jasonkoch.io is already on Vercel. Burrow™ uses:
burrow.jasonkoch.io— productionburrow-dev.jasonkoch.io— development / preview (previewbranch)
The Vercel project slug stays vault. Retired hostnames vault.jasonkoch.io and vault-dev.jasonkoch.io are no longer assigned to this project. Site chrome links back to the apex jasonkoch.io.
If a new subdomain does not resolve, add a Cloudflare CNAME to cname.vercel-dns.com.
SSO deployment protection is disabled on this project so the public hostnames are reachable without a Vercel login.
GitHub Pages
GitHub Pages is not used. Do not enable it for this repository unless Vercel is unavailable.
Jira
Hosting work is tracked as VLT-127 / VLT-128. Hostname cutover to Burrow™ is VLT-133.
